Messenger RNA is a single-stranded transcript of a protein-coding gene, produced in the nucleus by transcription and exported to the cytoplasm for translation by ribosomes. It differs from DNA in using ribose rather than deoxyribose and uracil in place of thymine, and it is degraded by cellular machinery on a timescale of hours.
